About this project

The purpose of the Employee Bicycle Commuting project is to accommodate and encourage County personnel who want to ride their bikes to work. Some of our workers already use bikes for daily transportation and we want to increase the number that do. The project will start with the County's downtown offices--the County Administration Building, Courthouse, and Jobs and Family Services Building. After the project is successful in these buildings, we will spread the program to other locations. Eventually, Hamilton County hopes that other local businesses and organizations will see the benefits of this project and create their own bike commuting programs. We will be able to assist them through the lessons we learn with our own project.

At the start of this project, we conducted an online employee survey to measure interest and gather ideas for how to make it work. Over 300 people responded to the survey. Some respondents already ride to work, some might consider it under certain conditions, and others never would for various reasons. And that is okay--commuting by bike is not for everyone, and the project is not going to compel anyone to give up driving.

Making a bicycle-friendly workplace through a commuting program has many benefits to employees and the larger community, and it accomplishes this without costing a lot of money. The only significant up front cost will be providing convenient and secure bike parking.
