Criminal Sentencing

The sentence from a trial court in a criminal proceeding is the same approximate as a judgment from in civil courts, denoting that body’s formal declaration to the accused of the legal consequences of his or her conviction or the guilt to which he or she has confessed.
While the organization of  individual state law varies, all have some sort of penal & sentencing code which is followed and periodically reviewed & updated. Sentencing guidelines are those sets of standards determining the type and length of sentence imposed based on the nature of the crime and the individual’s past criminal record. Twenty-two states, the District of Columbia, and the Federal government have  formal bodies comprise of judges & lawmakers to review their statutes, anticipate change, and apply their own outlooks and philosophies on sentencing matters. Other states, such as Kentucky and Indiana, don’t have permanent structures for this undertaking, but rather periodically appoint, or legislatively, create temporary commissions or task forces.
