Letter of Invitation

Dear Elected Official/Administrator:

As leaders in your community, you may have already been asked by your constituents..."what are you doing to go green?" And as we all look at difficult budgets these days, we also know that finding ways to use less energy in all we do can provide a huge opportunity for cost savings.

That's why Hamilton County has teamed up with Miami University to design a program of workshops to give governments and leaders throughout the county a user-friendly toolkit on how to save money by implementing best practices in your government regarding energy use and green policies. We invite your community to take part and benefit from this approach going forward.

As way of background, on June 4th, Hamilton County held a half-day summit to spark an initial discussion on the role that local governments can play in reducing environmental impact, creating jobs and saving money by taking action on the issue of global climate change. The theme of the summit was clear: conserving energy translates to reduced costs, more efficient use of taxpayer resources, and economic development opportunities. Not to mention a higher quality of life. The turnout and enthusiasm created around this summit were simply fantastic. On behalf of Hamilton County, we would like to thank you for your participation in this even and would like to take this time to brief you on our next steps.

As we closed the summit, the County asked participants to indicate if they would like to be involved in future efforts organized around this issue. Again, the response was outstanding. As such, we are announcing the formation of the Hamilton County Climate Initiative. Working with Miami University, this initiative will facilitate an effort of political subdivisions, the County included, to design and implement individualized action plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve energy in our communities, and save dollars. Tthe theory behind the Initiative focuses is that while all of our communities certainly could develop action plans individually, we can proceed more rapidly and achieve better results by working together, and learning from one another, toward this goal. In other words, there's no need to reinvent the wheel one community at a time.

Please see the links above on the specifics behind the Hamilton County Climate Action Initiative.

Sincerely,

Todd Portune
