Tonia F. Edwards, AIA, CBO, Building Commissioner

Her experience before coming to Hamilton County included private architectural practice in Ohio and New York City, corporate facilities management at Citibank, N.A., and government experience in urban design and planning with the City of New York in the South Bronx, Department of City Planning. She graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York with a Bachelor of Architecture, and was awarded the Alpha Rho Chi Medal for service.

In 2001, she was the President of Southwest Ohio Building Officials Association (SWOBOA), a member of the International Code Council, the Ohio Building Officials Association, the American Institute of Architects, and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.  She was awarded and commendation from exemplary achievement in 2002 from the Ohio House of Representatives, 124th General Assembly.

In January, 2002, Tonia was awarded the Harvey E. Wilbekin Ohio Building Official of the Year by the Ohio Building Officials Association (OBOA). 

• Tonia Edwards was Hamilton County Employee of the year in 2006.
• On December 3, 2004, Tonia Edwards was awarded with a CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD from SWOBOA. The award of Career Achievement was presented to her for her continued efforts to mentor, educate and improve Building Code Regulations, Code Enforcement and the public understanding and perception of the Building Inspection Profession.
• The Hamilton County Department of Building Inspections has been rated the most effective inspection agency in the state by the Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO), a national organization dedicated to the analysis and evaluation of property and liability risk for the insurance industry. ISO recently announced its Building Code Effectiveness Grading Schedule (BCEGS), on a scale from 1 to 10; Hamilton County Building Inspections earned a 2, with 1 being the highest, displaying and "exemplary commitment to building code enforcement". Hamilton County's grade 2 is the top grade among the state's over 600 building departments and is the only department to receive this high of a rating within Ohio.
• Tonia Edwards was named Ohio's Building Official of the Year (2001-2002) by the Ohio Building Officials Association.

Hamilton County Building Commissioner since 1993, Ms. Edwards was recognized for her leadership, professionalism, and dedication to public service. Recently she served as president of the Southwest Ohio Building Officials Association, a chapter that encompasses five counties.
