Unlike elected officials, staff, or administrations, residents from local communities who volunteer in planning and zoning commissions do not have regular networking events where they can “meet and greet” fellow commissioners and learn from their experiences in the “trenches.”
The Planning Commissioners’ Forum fills that void. Since 2005, a group of volunteers has been working with the Regional Planning Commission designing the event, carefully selecting the topics for discussion, and strategizing the best way to promote conversation. This year’s Organizing Committee included Frank Davis (Montgomery), Steve Sievers (Anderson Twp.), Adam Goetzman (Green Twp.), Merrie Stillpass (Amberley), and Jenny Kilgore (Glendale).
On Saturday November 7, commissioners from Amberley, Anderson, Blue Ash, Colerain, Columbia, Forest Park, Greenhills, Lincoln Heights, Madeira, Montgomery, North Bend, Sharonville and Wyoming gathered at the Blue Ash Recreation Center.
Keynote speaker at the event was Johnna Reeder from Duke Energy. Her presentation focused on “smart” technology and sustainable energy practices being deployed.
There were numerous opportunities for participants to engage in conversation and learn what their peers and neighboring communities are doing on issues of common interest. Some of the topics of the roundtables were “Is your community in compliance with the Fair Housing Act? ,”A discussion on form based code,” “Planning Commissions: The first in the line of fire,” and “Is your community ready for deployment of new technology?”
