Summary

The lots of 165 McMicken, 167 McMicken, and 1607 Main Street all have the same owner and are mixed use, with the first floor containing commercial and the residents of the building residing on the upper floors. The original complex inhibits several building code violations, causing an overhaul of the stairwells and even the removal of the stairs in some areas. An elevator was added to assist six of the nine units. Along with the addition of ADA bathrooms and spaces, these units all become handicap accessible. To the rear of the building, major additions would include balconies for each of the units that also assist in sun shading as well as a terrace for all of the residents. The commercial uses consist of a Laundromat with an exterior waiting area, a video store, and a barbershop. The intention of this project was to allow a variety of residents to live in the spaces while providing commercial uses essential to the surrounding area as well as show why different passive methods of helping the environment are so important.
