Economic Development It is our aim that this proposal when built will help spur economic redevelopment in the neighborhood. We will do this by instituting the smart development idea of mixed use construction. Within this block we hope to create many of the services that are required by the residents and many of the neighbors. Among these being service industries such as daycare facilities, a laundromat, a barber/salon, and a local market. It is our hope that these potential companies would choose to employ residents of this development or from the surrounding neighborhood. Another plank in our economic development platform is to directly create jobs through the development of this block, the corner buildings (1601 & 1605 Main) will house several ecological friendly or green technology companies. The site landscaping should require a certain level of maintenance and will necessitate a gardener/groundskeeper to be employed on-site. There should also be regular maintenance performed on the proposed black and grey water systems. We also wish to encourage small business ownership through the creation of several live/work units and by the creation of business lofts in close proximity to residential units. In addition to taking these direct steps towards economic redevelopment additional indirect steps should be taken. Increasing the ease of transportation in the area and bettering the perceived safety of the area will do much to revitalize development in the area. We should also encourage involvement in the community by giving priority to individuals who already live in the area, have jobs in the area, or who have investments in the area. In the long run these steps will prove to be the most effective ones. |
