The existing building at 163 McMicken St. currently houses Garcia's Quick Stop and one residential unit. The stock room in the rear of the building is in very bad repair and needs to be demolished, as it is unsafe. In place of this space I propose a solar hook. The building as it currently exists cannot receive any of the benefits of solar exposure. I propose to create an addition to this building that will provide it with southern exposure that can be used to heat the entire building through combined solar hot water and radiant heating system. This addition also allows this building to respond to the new public nature of the Liberty St. face created by the revitalization of the open space on the site. This addition could be used as a café or coffee shop. The residential unit on the second floor is intended for use by the owner of one or both of the commercial enterprises on the first floor to promote both monetary and emotional investment in the community.
