When possible, site plans should incorporate BMPs that encourage retaining storm water runoff on the property.

Detention and retention ponds, when constructed and maintained properly, encourage storage, infiltration and evaporation by slowing down the process of moving water off site.  Constructed wetlands built in conjunction with basins can address water quality as well. These basins can also be designed to function as a reservoir for watering landscaping.

Instead of building a detention or retention pond for each parcel, consider the concept of regional storage for numerous properties or larger areas.
