Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in health science or coursework or training in pathogenic bacteriology, parasitology, organic chemistry, medical entomology, environmental microbiology and animal physiology and four (4) years experience in public health inspection certification as a State of Ohio Sanitarian; two years management experience; or equivalent combination of training and/or experience; must acquire and maintain State of Ohio Sanitarian Registration within one (1) year in their classification; must be able to obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the state of residency.

Illustrative Duties:
40% (1) Supervises the activities of the sanitarian staff in the performance of job duties and responsibilities; assigns and reviews work and evaluates performance; interviews job applicants and recommends hire; recommends and administers discipline as needed; ensures staff adherence to department policies and procedures; trains new employees; develops departmental procedures in accordance with overall guidelines as established by the Board of Health. 20% (2) Review plans, licenses and permits and give technical advise to sanitarians on matters relating to public health sanitation (e.g., food service operation, vending machines, water supplies, building sites, swimming pools, sanitary landfills, camps, recreational areas, marinas, etc.); ensures the enforcement of state, federal and local codes and regulations; ensures that operation and location do not present a health hazard; confers with other local and state agencies. 15% (3) Receives complaints or reports of food borne diseases; evaluates results of test and other information obtained; develops and recommends corrective actions; enforces ordered actions; investigates all animal bites; submits animal heads for laboratory testing; receives nuisance complaints (e.g., trash, garbage, standing odorous water, etc.) And issues orders to abate nuisance problems; assists in mosquito control program. 20% (4) Conducts on-site inspections of facilities and systems to ensure they meet required health standards (e.g., food service operations, food establishments, water supply, restrooms, swimming pools, landfills, beaches, etc.); evaluates inspection data and unhealthy conditions; inspects substandard housing; issues order for correction. 5% (5) Prepares annual budget requests and projections; controls fiscal accounts to ensure budgetary compliance; prepares monthly reports; reviews permits and license fees; oversees collection of permit and license fees and assessment of delinquent fees; determines manpower needed; performs public relations to inform the public of health agency programs and regulations.
